Clinic significance
Bile acids are synthesized in the liver and secreted into the bile. They are taken back up in the intestine and returned via the portal vein to the liver where they are actively reabsorbed. In cholestasis or impaired liver function, the efficiency of the reabsorption process may be reduced and bile acids may be found in the peripheral blood.
