Clinic significance
Mycobacteria are tested for in patients presenting with:
* clinical symptoms which are suggestive of tuberculosis. The most common etiologic agents of this disease are M. tuberculosis, M. bovis and M. africanum;
* lesions which are typical of infection with opportunistic mycobacteria. Different organs tend to be more associated with certain species:
- lungs: M. avium intracellulare, M. kansasii, M. xenopi, M. malmoense, M. abscessus
- lymph nodes: M. avium intracellulare, M. kansasii and M. scrofulaceum ;
- skin: M. marinum, M. ulcerans and M. chelonae;
- pus: M. avium intracellulare, M. kansasii, M. xenopi and M. chelonae;
- systemic infections: M. avium intracellulare, M. kansasii, M. xenopi.
Prenalytics
- Expectoration (3 consecutive days), BAL, Bronchial aspiration, pulmonary sample, pleural fluid, synovial fluid, ascite fluid, gastric fluid, Gastric intubation, Pericardic fluid : 5 mL Urine: 50 mL of morning urine (3 consecutive days) CSF: 1 mL Stool: 20 g Biopsies, swabbing: 2 swabs, do not add fluid. Pus or abscess : 2ml or swab, do not add fluid. Citrated whole blood : 10mL Bone marrow
