Clinic significance
Zoonotic trematode infections of a wide range of different mammalian species. Includes flukes which infect the liver (Fasciola hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Clonorchis sinensis), the intestine (Fasciolopsis buski) and the lungs (Paragonimus). Liver infections are the most common in Europe with an acute phase (due to elaboration of a toxin) followed by progressive asthenia, febrile episodes, pain in the right hypochondriac region and marked eosinophilia. Definitive diagnosis depends on the detection of characteristic eggs in the feces. Serological responses are at their strongest during the acute phase but remain positive in chronic forms with biliary involvement. Serological analysis can also be of use in pauciparasitic infections (in which eggs may be difficult to find).
