Clinic significance
Estradiol is the main steroid estrogen. In women, it is synthesized in the vesicular ovarian follicles and, in men, in the testes, either directly or by converting testosterone. In men, high levels are found in patients with gonadotropin-secreting or androgen-secreting tumors (e.g. of the testis or the adrenal gland). In children, high levels are associated with precocious puberty, ovarian cysts and tumors of the either ovary, the testis or the adrenal gland.
