Clinic significance
Lp(a) is a lipoprotein particle which contains LDL and apoB100. Its metabolic control is independent on that of the other lipoproteins. A high plasma Lp(a) concentration is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and stroke syndrome. It is structurally close to plasminogen and could represent a link between atherosclerosis and thrombosis. No dietary measures or lipid-lowering drugs have been discovered which effectively bring down Lp(a) levels.
