Clinic significance
The osmotic pressure of a solution is proportional to the number of particles it contains, including ions (e.g. sodium and potassium ions) and whole molecules (e.g. glucose and urea molecules). The osmotic pressure of plasma may be too high (which can entail hyperosmolar coma) due to excess glucose or alcohol, or due to over-treatment with hyperosmolar solutions. Plasma osmolarity can be reduced as a result of sodium loss (via the urine or into the intestine) or water retention. Osmolarity is expressed as mmol/L of solution and osmolality as mmol/Kg of solvent
