Clinic significance
Poliovirus causes acute anterior poliomyelitis when it infects the central nervous system, usually the spinal cord but in some cases it reaches the medulla oblongata and causes irreversible paralysis. Poliomyelitis has almost been completely eradicated in the industrialized world. Serological analysis also gives a measure of the efficacy of immunization.
WHO declared global eradication of wild poliovirus type 2 (WPV2) in September 2015 and wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) in October 2019.
This success is attributable to the widespread use of oral polio vaccines (OPV).
WHO recommends limiting the possession and handling of Poliovirus type 2 and 3 strains.
Thus, since 10/01/2022, Poliovirus serology includes only the search for neutralising antibodies to Poliovirus type 1.
