Clinic significance
Retinol Binding Protein (RBP) is a non-glycosylated alpha-globulin secreted by the liver which transports vitamin A in the form of retinol complexed with prealbumin. The retinol circulates to the tissues where it is required ((the skin, mucous membranes, retina, etc.). Free RBP passes into the glomerular filtrate but is reabsorbed and then metabolized.
RBP levels rise during fatty change and chronic renal insufficiency proximal tubular dysfunction.
Reduced levels are associated with vitamin A deficiency, tubular nephritis, colorectal cancer, liver disease, severe inflammation and acute malnutrition.
The test is more sensitive than N acetyl-betaglucosaminidase and correlates well with beta -2-microglobulin
