Clinic significance
About 80% of the triiodothyronine (T3) in the circulation is derived by the deiodination of thyroxine (T4). Increased levels are seen in primary (peripheral) and secondary (central) hyperthyroidism. In some forms of hyperthyroidism, only T3 is elevated (T3-secreting adenomas). T3 levels depend on the concentration of transport proteins and vary in response to certain drugs.
