Clinic significance
The West Nile virus is an arbovirus belonging to the Flavivirus genus. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito of the genus Culex. In recent years, human and equine cases have been detected in the south of France and in Corsica. Infection is asymptomatic in 80% of cases. In symptomatic patients, it mainly manifests itself as a flu-like syndrome combining fever, headache and myalgia. In very rare cases, neurological forms are observed: meningitis, encephalitis, meningoencephalitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Diagnosis of West Nile virus infection is based on testing for the viral genome in blood up to 7 days after the first symptoms appear, and in CSF if there are neurological signs. PCR can be combined with serology from the 5th day after the onset of symptoms.
West Nile virus is a reportable disease.
