Clinic significance
The D-Xylose test is used to study intestinal malabsorption conditions. After oral administration, D-Xylose is taken up in the duodenumn and the intestinal part of the jejunum. It is not metabolised.
Reduced response in cases of enteropathy, chronic diarrhoea, ileitis, ileocolitis with steatorrhoea, cholestatic icterus.
Very reduced response in cases of steatorrhoea, enteritis, sprue and coeliac disease.
Normal response in malabsorption of pancreatic origin.
It is preferable to defer the test in cases of accelerated transit, kidney failure, bacterial infection, liver infection.
