Clinic significance
Intermediate steroid in glucocorticoid and androgen biosynthesis, from progesterone and/or 17-OH-pregnenolone. It is metabolised to delta-4-androstenedione (androgen pathway) or 11-deoxycortisol (glucocorticoid pathway). The urinary catabolite is pregnanetriol. The interest of its assay lies in the analysis of hyperandrogens associated with an andrenal 21-hydroxylase enzyme deficiency. Circadian rhythm.
