Clinical significance
Derived from pregnenolone by the action of 17-alpha hydroxylase and subsequently converted into 17 alpha hydroxypregesterone or DHEA (both the delta-4 and delta-5 pathways exist). Useful in the evaluation of hyperandrogenism due to 3-beta-hydroxy-dehydrogenase deficiency. Complete deficiency is manifested within the first few days of life but partial deficiency is often not discovered until hyperandrogenism or infertility is diagnosed in an adult.
