Clinical significance

A membrane-bound enzyme which is mainly found in liver tissue. A sensitive and specific marker for cholestasis. Neither growth, pregnancy nor enzyme-inducing drugs affect its concentration. Its activity may be increased in hepatoma, hepatic metastasis and other primary tumors (e.g. breast cancer).
