Clinic significance
A peptide secreted by the neuronal cells of the supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus. Its rate of secretion is under the control of cerebral osmoreceptors and baroreceptors in the carotid arteries. This test can be used to distinguish between syndromes which feature polyuria, polydipsia and hyposthenuria (nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, central diabetes insipidus and primary polydipsia with potomania) and those associated with the over-production of vasopressin (e.g. over-production by ectopic tumors - inappropriate antidiuretic hormone syndrome, or secondary to CNS lesions or adrenal or thyroid insufficiency).
