Clinical significance
Parasitic rat lung nematode. The intermediate host is a mollusc. Human contamination occurs essentially via the consumption of undercooked shellfish, prawns, fish or vegetables and fruit contaminated by shellfish. The geographic zones concerned are the South Pacific, South-East Asia and Taiwan. During the normal cycle, humans are final hosts. The incubation period is 1 to 3 weeks. Infection may be asymptomatic or induce eosinophilic meningitis with headaches, stiffness of the neck and paraesthesia. The illness lasts for a few to several days and is rarely fatal.
