Clinic significance
Alpha-2 macroglobulin is a glycoprotein synthesized in the liver which has a number of different roles: it helps macrophages inactivate and remove serine proteases at inflammatory foci; it inhibits coagulation by inactivating thrombin and kallikrein; it inhibits fibrinolysis by inactivating plasmin; and it is also involved in insulin transport. Its level rises during nephrosis and pregnancy.
