Clinic significance
Alpha-1 globulin is one of a group of small proteins (including alpha-2 globulin or Retinol Binding Protein, the cystatins and free immunoglobulin light chains) commonly found in urine when there is damage to kidney tubules. The level of alpha-1 globulin constitutes a sensitive assay because it remains stable, even at low pH; however, if an increase is observed in the urine, renal insufficiency should always be considered.
