Clinical significance

Entamoeba histolytica is the only ameba which is pathogenic for humans. It causes chronic or acute amebic dysentery. The organism can penetrate the circulation and cause internal abscesses, most commonly in the liver but occasionally in the lungs or the brain. Diagnosis of gastrointestinal infection depends on examining fresh or thiomersal/iodine/formol-fixed stool samples. Serological analysis can be useful when there are visceral forms (antibody titers are generally greater then 320). High antibody levels persist more one year after cure.
