Clinic significance
A polyene antibiotic which is active against most pathogenic fungi (both yeast-like and mycelial species). Administered parenterally to control systemic mycosis. Its dose-dependent nephrotoxicity necessitates close monitoring, especially in patients with impaired renal function. Assaying serum levels is the ideal way of monitoring treatment.
