Clinical significance

Annexin V has an anti coagulant function in preventing self activation of prothrombin on the surface of the placental villosity membrane. These anti annexin V antibodies are potentially responsible for repeated foetal loss at the heart of anti phospholid syndromes. Anti annexin V IgG is present in 20% of lupus cases and is associated with a previous history of thrombotics and repeated foetal loss. 30% of lupus patients with anti phospholipid syndromes show presence of anti annexine V compared to just 4% of lupus patients without anti phospholipid syndrome.
