Clinical significance
Tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) is one of the physiological activators of plasminogen. Important in fibrinolysis. t-PA levels are increased in a wide variety of different pathological conditions including respiratory distress, myocardial infarction, shock, septicemia and serious liver damage. Defective t-PA release from the endothelium compromises the fibrinolytic process and is therefore a thrombotic risk factor.WARNING: not to be confused with the other TPA test - "Tissue Polypeptide Antigen" - which is a tumor marker and for which the specimen must be frozen. All orders must be filled out with the name in full rather than the acronym.
