Clinic significance

Pyruvic acid is generated in the course of carbohydrate and alcohol metabolism. The reduction of pyruvic acid produces lactic acid. Increased levels are observed in thiamine deficiency, in subjects eating carbohydrate-rich diets, following excessive muscular activity, in diabetic coma and in ribose deficiency.
