Clinical significance
Caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, this probably represents the most widespread nematode infection. Pathogenesis in humans is initially due to migration of the larvae (causing pneumonitis or Lofler's syndrome). This is followed by colonization of the intestine by the adult worms which can elicit allergic reactions and induce various gastrointestinal complications, including complete obstruction in some cases or ectopic migration into the gallbladder. Diagnosis usually depends on the identification of an adult worm or the distinctive thick-walled eggs in the feces (or occasionally in vomit). Serological analysis of material extracted from coelomic fluid or genital specimens is complementary.
