Clinical significance

In widespread use in the paint and dye industries, and as a pesticide and fungicide. Organic arsenic derivatives from foodstuffs are relatively harmless but its mineral derivatives are highly toxic. They can be absorbed in the airways, via the digestive tract or through the skin. Poisoning manifests with gastrointestinal symptoms, hemolytic anemia and hemorrhagic cardiovascular problems. This test is suitable for cases of oral poisoning but is not recommended for monitoring occupational risk.
