Clinical significance

An antibiogram is a laboratory test used to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of a bacterial strain to various antibiotics. The bacterial strains tested are isolated and identified from biological samples. Antibiotic susceptibility testing is performed on these isolated strains, freshly transplanted and sent to the laboratory at room temperature (< 5 days). Antibiotic susceptibility testing can be performed on liquid or solid media, either manually or automatically. Antibiotics tested and recommendations for interpretation are defined by the Comité de l'antibiogramme of the Société Française de Microbiologie. Antibiotic susceptibility test results must be interpreted according to the clinical-biological context, the patient's pathophysiology, the antibiotic dosage(s) used...
