Clinical significance
Body fluids are screened for beta-2-transferrin when a leakage of cerebrospinal fluid is suspected or when screening for CSF fistulas. Beta-2-transferrin is normally found at low concentrations in the CSF but is usually absent from the blood. This test is mainly used in ENT, neurosurgery or traumatology. The test requires a serum sample, to exclude any serum fraction of beta-2-transferrin, and a body fluid sample, such as oral discharge, nasal discharge or other.
