Clinical significance

Streptococcus pneumoniae PCR and/or Neisseria meningitis PCR are performed on samples from normally sterile sites. PCR is particularly indicated in situations where patients have been treated with antibiotics prior to sampling. Streptococcus pneumoniae PCR is generally performed on pleural fluids or CSF. Neisseria meningitis PCR is usually performed on CSF and skin biopsies in cases of purpura fulminans

Preanalytics
  • Samples taken from sterile sites (puncture fluids such as pleural fluids (sterile bottle, dry tube), CSF (sterile sealed tube), skin biopsy in case of suspected purpura fulminans (sterile bottle, dry tube), bacterial culture (culture medium or agar tube) - 0.5 mL for liquid samples
  •   Refrigerated
  • A tube specifically for this analysis : No
