Clinical significance
A bacterium which causes soft chancre or chancroid, a venereal infection usually of males which is rare in developed countries although it is sometimes imported from endemic areas. A genital ulcer forms and develops into an inguinal bubo which can progress to form a fistula. Direct diagnosis can be made from a Methylene blue or Giemsa-stained smear and Gram-stained prepared with material harvested from the base of the chancroid or with pus from the affected lymph node. The bacterium is difficult to culture and requires a special medium. Serological analysis is sometimes possible but specific antibodies are only found at very low levels and those only for a relatively brief period.
