Clinical significance

The beta-D-Glucan Test is a manual in vitro device that consists of reagents used on the Toxinometer MT-6500 to quantitatively measure (1>3) -beta-D-glucan in patient samples using a kinetic turbidimetric procedure. Invasive fungal infections are serious infections in which the infectious agents involved may be yeasts (Candida spp, Cryptococcus neoformans), filamentous fungi (Aspergillus spp, Zygomycetes), Pneumocystis jiroveci and other moulds (Fusarium spp, Scedosporium spp). Patients at risk are immunocompromised patients (haematology, intensive care, organ transplants, etc.). (1>3)-beta-D-glucan is a component of the fungal wall of most fungi (including yeast and filamentous fungi) with the exception of C. neoformans and zygomycetes. beta-D-glucan is a biological criterion of probable fungal infection for the diagnosis of candidiasis and pneumocystis when it is found positive in two consecutive samples in immunocompromised patients (EORTC 2019 recommendations) after exclusion of other aetiologies. This test is not a substitute for the clinical examination, imaging studies, isolation and culture of the pathogen required to establish the diagnosis of certainty of an IFI.
