Clinical significance
Bisphenols, including Bisphenol A, are chemical compounds and recognized endocrine disruptors, used in the manufacture of plastics and resins. They are (or were) used, for example, in the manufacture of food containers such as bottles and baby bottles. They are also found in protective films inside cans and tins, metal lids on glass jars, and on heat-sensitive paper, where they are used as a developer. When present in food packaging or containers, it can migrate out of the plastic and into food, making food the main route of contamination for the general population. Urinary measurement of bisphenols provides an estimate of recent exposure, which is a good indicator of the individual practices to be modified if we wish to reduce the body burden of endocrine disruptors.
