Clinical significance
Bullous skin diseases provoke cutaneous lesions (and/or mucous membrane lesions) that are not specific for the type of disease (pemphigus, pemphigoid etc.). They are characterised by the presence of auto antibodies that bind to the structures causing the cohesion of the epidermis or the dermal-epidermal junction. On sections of monkey oesophagus, within the tested areas (dermal-epidermal membrane or intracellular substance) we differentiate 2 major disease types (pemphigus or pemphigoid). Further testing can be carried-out to identify the antigenic targets and these antibodies and thus orient the diagnosis to a specific disease:¿ The presence of anti-BP 230 and BP 180 antibodies is suggestive of pemphigoid ¿ The presence of anti-BP 180 antibodies is suggestive of benign mucous membrane pemphigoid or pemphigoid gestationis (e.g. herpes gestationis) ¿ The presence of anti-dermal basement membrane antibodies is suggestive of epidermolysis bullosa ¿ The presence of anti-desmoglein 1 antibodies is suggestive of pemphigus foliaceus ¿ The presence of anti-desmoglein 3 antibodies is suggestive of pemphigus chronicus
