Clinical significance
Brucellosis (or Malta fever) is an anthropozoonosis caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella. The disease is endemic in most countries around the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia, South America, and Africa. Human infections are mainly related to Brucella melitensis (from sheep, goats), Brucella abortus (cattle) and Brucella suis (suidae). Serological diagnosis is only of interest if the culture is not performed or if it fails, for example in the sub-acute or chronic phase of the disease. Due to the discontinuation of the Wright test, the techniques used are the Rose Bengale test (agglutination) and the Brucellacapt® (agglutination by immunocapture). Please note that these techniques cannot be used to test for Brucella canis infection.
