Clinical significance
CA 72-4 is a glycoprotein found in many types of adenocarcinomas of the colon, breast, stomach, ovary, endometrium and lung. This test is most useful in adenocarcinomas of the stomach and mucinous ovarian carcinomas but high levels may also be found in malignancies involving other parts of the digestive tract. The presence of Carbohydrate Antigen 72-4 in an aspiration biopsy is a strong indication of malignancy.
