Clinical significance
This measurement of the biologically active fraction of the circulating calcium is useful for the investigation of calcium metabolism in malignancy, hyper- and hypoparathyroidism, nephropathy with acid-base imbalance, acute pancreatitis and emergency situations involving massive blood transfusions or serious burns. Variations in calcium ion levels follow those of total calcium except in acidosis in which condition the ion fraction is increased due to reduced binding by proteins; in alkalosis, the ion fraction is reduced.
