Clinical significance

A polypeptide hormone elaborated by the parafollicular cells (C cells) of the thyroid gland. The parafollicular cells should be considered as an entity in and of itself, distinct from the actual thyroid gland. Calcitonin secretion is stimulated by hypercalcemia. It acts as a physiological antagonist of parathyroid hormone. An ideal marker for medullary cancers of the thyroid gland.
