Clinical significance
Calprotectin is present in large amount in Granulocytes. Presence in stool reflects bowels inflamation. Quantification may be useful for bowels inflamatory Dieseases diagnosis or follow-up. In adults and children over the age of 4, faecal calprotectin measurement is therefore used :In the context of an IBD diagnostic referral: a negative result means that digestive inflammation can be ruled out and the invasive and costly procedure of medical imaging can be avoided. In the context of IBD follow-up: a negative result indicates a state of remission, with or without healing of the mucosa. A positive result, depending on its intensity, can show whether the inflammation has progressed to a stage requiring an endoscopic procedure and/or a change in treatment. In children from birth to 4 years of age, the faecal calprotectin assay helps paediatricians to diagnose IBD, thanks to 4 positivity thresholds based on 4 age groups.
