Clinical significance
Campylobacter is a ubiquitous pathogen responsible for intestinal infections that are extremely common worldwide. Human contamination occurs mainly through food after ingestion of poultry (main reservoir) or contaminated water. The species most frequently found in human pathology are Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Campylobacter can cause a very wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, of which acute gastroenteritis is the most common with often bloody diarrhoea.Extra-intestinal involvement may be observed, in particular sepsis. Clinical manifestations vary depending on the species involved. Campylobacter infections can be complicated by rare but serious post-infectious immunological manifestations (reactive arthritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS)). Serology has a retrospective interest in the diagnosis of these post-infectious complications.
