Clinical significance
An essential cofactor in the mitochondrial oxidation of fatty acids. Low serum levels are associated with either reduced synthesis, excess excretion (leakage into the urine or dialysis) or inadequate intake (due to malnutrition, poor absorption or parenteral nutrition).
