Clinical significance

Component C5 is part of the shared effector cascade and can be cleaved by both classic and alternative C3 convertases. Formation of the membrane attack complex (C5b-9) at the surface of a bacterium or a cell results in damage to its membrane and ultimately its death.C5 deficiency is associated with recurrent infections (especially with Neisseria) and is also observed in certain lupus-like syndromes.
