Clinical significance

Specific catecholamine competitive antagonist in beta-adrenergic receptors, with no intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. It is a cardioselective beta-blocker, i.e. preferentially acting on beta-cardiac receptors. This selectivity is not absolute and may cause asthma attacks at high doses. The presence of a sympathomimetic activity reduces the broncho- or vasoconstrictive effect and metabolic disturbances.
