Clinical significance

Ceruloplasmin is an alpha2-globulin which contains 95% of all the copper in the blood. Normally, the ceruloplasmin concentration is very low in new-borns and steadily increases with age.Low ceruloplasmin levels are observed in: - Wilson's disease, in which decreased ceruloplasmin levels are the main detectable feature (although levels are normal in at least 5% of cases); - Menkes syndrome which is the result of defective absorption of copper in the intestine; - nephrotic syndrome.Ceruloplasmin levels are increased in: - inflammatory conditions; - cirrhosis; - subjects taking estrogenic oral contraceptives; - pregnancy; - poisoning with copper salts.
