Clinical significance
Chikungunya (Swahili for "that which bends up," in reference to the stooped posture of patients afflicted with the severe joint pain associated with this disease) is an Arbovirus transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes, usually Aedes. Usually found in Eastern Africa, South-Eastern Asia and in India, it is currently being reported in the Indian Ocean Islands. Chikungunya fever is characterized by sudden onset, 4 to 7 days after the infecting mosquito bite. Typically associated with arthralgia and myalgia affecting limbs extremities (wrists, ankles, phalanx), oedema, headhache and rash may occur. Begnin heamorrhages (like epitaxis and gingivorrhagia) may be observed in young child's. The spontaneous evolution of the disease is most often favourable. Nevertheless, some chronic forms are characterised by persistent arthralgia, sometimes disabling. Therapy relies on Non Steroid Anti Inflamatory Drugs prescription to soothe the pain.
