Clinical significance

Responsible for an infection that is quite widespread humans. This manifests by atypical pneumopathy, often long-lasting, that may be severe in children and the elderly. The germ may remain in a latent state and cause chronic respiratory and cardiovascular pathology. Diagnosis is possible at the onset of the condition by culture and gene amplification (PCR) of respiratory samples. Serological diagnosis is based on increased titre of specific IgG on 2 serum samples at least 3 weeks apart (slow increase in intracellular bacteria) regardless of whether it is accompanied by IgM (primary infection) -or not(repeat infection) The prevalence of antiC. pneumoniae IgG is approximately 50% in the general population. During an infection, the increase in antibodies is slow and requires analysis of 2 serum samples 3 weeks apart. During repeat infections, IgM do not generally reappear.
