Clinical significance
An enzyme mainly found in the myocardium and other muscle tissue. The most useful application of assaying CK is following suspected myocardial infraction. The enzyme activity begins to increase between the 4th and 8th hour after infarction but such a rise is relatively non-specific (could be due to myopathy, muscular injury, an intramuscular infection or an epileptic attack) and, while it may aid myocardial infraction diagnosis, it does not confirm it. Enzyme activity can increase significantly with exercise and different ethnic group display difference levels.
