Clinical significance
In case a recent CMV primo-infection cannot be completely excluded, particularly in a pregnant woman, specific antibody avidity assay should be suggested. The technique lies on the difference in avidity to the same antigen, displayed by IgGs as a function of the time elapsed between primo-infection and the day of sampling. This avidity is measured after submission of the IgGs to a dissociating agent (urea). A high avidity index has been shown to exclude a recent infection, dating less than three to four months back. Please indicate CMV serology results (if performed beforehand) and term of the possible pregnancy.
