Clinical significance
This is a respiratory infection caused by Bordetella pertussis, characterised by episodes of coughing fits, which can be serious in infants. Vaccination has brought the disease under relative control, but protection is not absolute. Older children, adolescents and adults may present with pertussis, which is often atypical and contributes to the spread of the germ. In practice, bacteriological diagnosis is difficult because of the fragility of the bacteria. Detection by gene amplification (PCR) is preferable. PCR should be carried out no later than 3 weeks after the onset of clinical signs.
