Clinical significance
The major natural glucocorticoid hormone synthesized from cholesterol in the zona fasciculata and the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex. Its secretion is regulated by ACTH and, in a negative feedback loop, by Corticotropin Releasing Factor (CRF) produced in the hypothalamus. Cortisol has glucocorticoid activity (it affects glucose, lipid and protein metabolism). High levels are observed in Cushing's disease and endogenous depression.

Further information
SPECIAL OR DELICATE SAMPLE: the kit used to collect and transport the saliva sample is called a "Salivette". It is available upon request. Before sampling, the patient must observe a time of at least 30 minutes without consuming food or acidic beverages. It is very important not to contaminate the saliva sample with blood, therefore, it is necessary to avoid brushing teeth before collection. The collection protocol is described in the package insert accompanying the sampling kit.
CIRCADIAN RHYTHM: This biological molecule has a circadian rhythm (maximum concentration in morning), with a sufficiently significant amplitude to have an important influence on the clinical interpretation
Methodology
Radioimmunoassay
Turnaround time
2 weeks (if dilution/control needed - TAT 4 weeks
