Clinical significance
Cortisone is generated by the oxidation of cortisol which is synthesized in the zona fasciculata and the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex. One of the17-hydroxy-corticosteroids. Increases in hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's syndrome) and decreases in adrenal hyperplasia linked to deficiency in 11-, 21- or 17-hydroxylase.
