Respiratory viral illnesses in winter have an unspecific symptomatology, making it impossible to identify a particular viral agent.
Influenza and SARS-CoV-2 infections can be potentially serious. Simultaneous testing for the viruses responsible for influenza and COVID-19 infection can enable patients to be managed appropriately, particularly when they are hospitalised or in social health-care institutions.
PCR includes simultaneous testing for influenza A and B viruses and COVID-19 infection, and is performed on nasopharyngeal swabs.
